The official budget is public record and hotly debated: Money comes in as taxes and goes out as jet fighters, DEA agents, wheat subsidies and Medicare, plus pensions and bennies for that great untamed socialist menace called a unionized public sector workforce that Republicans are always complaining about. According to popular legend, were broke and in so much debt that 40 years from now our granddaughters will still be hooking on weekends to pay the medical bills of this years retirees from the IRS, the SEC and the Department of Energy. Most Americans know about that budget. What they dont know is that there is another budget of roughly equal heft, traditionally maintained in complete secrecy. After the financial crash of 2008, it grew to monstrous dimensions, as the government attempted to unfreeze the credit markets by handing out trillions to banks and hedge funds. And thanks to a whole galaxy of obscure, acronym laden bailout programs, it eventually rivaled the official budget in size a huge roaring river of cash flowing out of the Federal Reserve to destinations neither chosen by the president nor reviewed by Congress, but instead handed out by fiat by unelected Fed officials using a seemingly nonsensical and apparently unknowable methodology. This article appears in the April 28, 2011 issue of Rolling Stone. The issue will be available on newsstands and in the online archive April 15. Now, following an act of Congress that has forced the Fed to open its books from the bailout era, this unofficial budget is for the first time becoming at least partially a matter of public record. Staffers in the Senate and the House, whose queries about Fed spending have been rebuffed for nearly a century, are now poring over 21,000 transactions and discovering a host of outrages and lunacies in the other budget. It is as though someone sat down and made a list of every individual on earth who actually did not need emergency financial assistance from the United States government, and then handed them the keys to the public treasure.

Still, the country's problems remain in terms of wealth inequality and general poverty. The United StatesThe United States, despite being one of the richest countries in the world, share with Nigeria the phenomenon of unequal distribution of wealth. Since the 1960's, the existing polarization in the United States increased, and the gap between rich and poor in the country during the 1990's was at its widest. A similar pattern to Nigeria can also be detected in the wage average growth in The Bureau of Labor Statistics recently indicated that new jobs being created in our economy were not the types of jobs that fuel economic growth. The play is being directed by Tara Brooke Watkins, a theater professor at Eastern Nazarene College near Boston. Though Watkins is a Tulsa native, she didnt learn about the burning of Black Wall Street until she was in graduate school at Emerson College. Later, after researching the history of Greenwood, she returned to Tulsa to host story circles with local residents, where they discussed their own dealings with racism and how they related to the 1921 massacre. Andre Harris was among the participants. Those insights are also included in the play. Its so foundational to Tulsas history, and most kids have never heard about it, she says of the massacre. How does community respond to their own history when it is presented through theater?Thats what I will be very intrigued to hear. Tulsa 21 is one of several local productions that have emerged in recent years to help Tulsa make sense of its dark past. Vanessa Adams Harris has been performing Big Mama Speaks, a one woman play about a survivor of the 1921 massacre, off and on for nearly 10 years. Though the titular character is fictional, she draws from historical works written by Hannibal Johnson and from Adams Harriss own black, Creek Nation, and German heritages. Art gives us a bridge to travel into stories, she says.

Researchers then implanted human islet cells encapsulated in the TMTD material in rodent subjects. The cells instantly began producing insulin, and the TMTD stopped the immune system from attacking them. This kept the rodents blood sugar under control, while the protection lasted for the entire length of the study, which was 174 days. This means diabetes was repressed for almost half a year. Whats amazing is that they stopped the mices need for insulin injections for around 6 months. The newly implanted pancreatic beta cells were allowed to freely secrete insulin, while the TMTD protected it from being attacked by the immune system. This technique would eliminate the need for daily insulin injections as well as the need for immuno suppressants. This proves type 1 diabetes cure close to reality! The treatment has the potential of being a long term solution for patients suffering from diabetes and essentially a cure. It could and will make their lives tremendously easier, and researchers are excited to progress with their research in human trials. If it proves successful, it will therefore open exciting possibilities for people with type 1 diabetes. referencesLearn insights about the benefits of proactive retraining and reskilling, and how you can better understand the economics of learning.
